The Heart That Takes

David sent messengers to get her, and when she came to him, he slept with her.

2 Samuel 11:4

"David sent messengers and took her." One small word—took—exposes the heart underneath.

The Hebrew word for "took" means to seize what isn't yours. It's the same word the prophet Nathan later uses when the rich man "took" the poor man's only lamb (2 Samuel 12:4). Here's what's staggering: David already had everything. God Himself said, "I gave you… and if that was not enough, I would have given you even more" (12:8). David's sin wasn't about need; it was about discontent. At its root, all sin is the belief that God's provision isn't good enough—a refusal to trust Him and a decision to take matters into our own hands. The sin David had tolerated for years was a heart that always wanted more.

Practice

Where does discontent show up in you? It might be money, comparison, attention, or appetite—the quiet conviction that what God has given isn't enough. Discontent is the soil where "taking" grows. Today, practice gratitude on purpose: name three specific things God has already given you, and ask Him to make your heart satisfied in Him.

Prayer

Father, forgive me for the times I've believed Your provision wasn't enough. Root out the discontent in me that reaches for what isn't mine. Teach me to be satisfied in You, and to trust that what You give is good. Amen.
